<description>LEARN ENGINES: AN EXPLORATION OF WAYS IN WHICH SEARCH ENGINES CAN MEET THE COGNITIVE NEEDS OF DEEP ONLINE LEARNERSPROBLEM DESCRIPTON: Search engines now carry out many cognitive activities once performed by students, and consequently learners can lose previously developed and practiced cognitive skills that required them to exercise mental effort and attendant learning (Hokanson and Hooper, 2000). Technology and computer systems encourage learners to develop a “snatch and grab philosophy” (Sutherland-Smith, 2002), “hasty, random choices with little thought and evaluation” (Eagleton et al., 2003) and “shallow, random and often passive interactions with text” (Bennett et al., 2008)INVESTIGATION: Despite the desire to design each experience with online information as quick and easy for the user, some researchers and designers believe that technology, especially search engines that are learners’ preferred research tool, can act as cognitive instruments. I suggest that designers rethink their roles and methodologies as designers of conditions for online experiences and pose this following question: in what ways can designers rethink online interfaces in order to trigger and support positive cognitive behaviors in their audiences? I don’t recommend that entertainment and e-commerce be designed to be more thought provoking and cognitively oriented. I suggest that designers rethink websites that aim to be educational or are used for educational purposes—interfaces that disseminate data for critical thinking—in ways that positively alter people’s cognitive behaviors and turn learners from collectors of information to critical thinkers.

<description>A DATABASE THAT USES A CURATORIAL APPROACH, IN WHICH A VARIETY OF QUALIFIED EXPERTS AND INSTITUTIIONS POINT TO RESOURCES IN GENERAL CIRCULATION RATHER THAN HOUSE THE ACTUAL RESEARCH DOCUMENTS THEMSELVES

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: While writing and discourse in design (as well as in relevant non-design disciplines, such as cognitive psychology, anthropology, computer science, and cultural theory) parallel this emerging design research culture, the means for accessing literature falls short in meeting the needs of design professionals and students. If you enter the key word branding into the typical university library catalog search engine, for example, you are more likely to yield books on cattle than on corporate strategy. Or if you want to locate one of the few doctoral dissertations in design, produced in more than a dozen research-oriented PhD programs around the world, you need a pretty good idea of the title or the research student’s name to find it. And should you find it necessary to access work in a non-design discipline that is relevant to design scholarship or practice, you are on your own to winnow the list of hundreds of books within a Library of Congress topical category to find something truly useful to your work. In other words, there are no robust databases on design research and few design-sensitive keyword lists driving other disciplinary search engines.
SOLUTION: The team agreed on a curatorial approach, in which a variety of qualified experts and institutiions with expertise in particular topical areas recommend content, replicates the editorial approach of refereed research publications in other fields. Curators are valued for their individual voices; a curatorial approach acknowledges that there are a variety of viewpoints on design issues. The work of a curator is to maintain a collection and frame artifacts critically within a broad range of ideas had histories, guided by their own specialized knowledge and perspectives.

Our goal is to use the database to point to resources in general circulation, not to house the actual research documents themselves. The database will be comprised of annotated bibliographical entries and links to other websites on which electronic documents reside.
The work on this project was done by graduate students in the Master of Graphic Design program at NC State University under Meredith Davis and Santiago Piedrafita and with the support of AIGA
