I personally believe this can be true, not literally but symbolically capturing the essence of a person in a photograph is something i strive to do in my work of portraiture. By having each person act out the various stereotype they have been subjected to & by providing a much smaller image of how they would prefer to be perceived. By putting people in boxes, whether or not these ideas stem from something positive, they are no longer independent. Each person is made up of many different entities and by allowing generalization these complexities are taken away from them.
