It needed to relate in some way to a current event, whether that be social, political, geographical, environmental, etc. I chose to focus mine on the events that recently took place in Egypt. As a feminist, I was deeply interested in the place that women held in the uprisings in Egypt, particularly after reading a fantastic article by Naomi Wolf (via Al-Jazeera English) on the subject. The strength of the movement, I learned, derived at least in part from the participation of women. "When women change, everything changes - and women in the Muslim world are changing," she writes. I agreed with part of the premise of this statement—the idea that women are essential and important forces in societal change—but I'm not sure I agree with the rest of it. Women have always had the ability and strength to become agents of transformation. I was steeped in these thoughts when the project was assigned, so of course they came out in my work. I created a burka from a sheer black chiffon fabric and designed an austere, angular, revealing black dress to go underneath—referencing the hidden strength of the Arab woman. Three of these images are digital; the rest I took with a plastic Holga toy camera. I processed and printed them myself. The third image in this set won second place in photography at the end-of-year student show. The second and sixth images won Liberal Arts purchase prizes. My theme was Dirigibles and Submersibles. I gave up on the theme about 2/3 of the way through the book; it was three days before the deadline, and I had a really good idea for a series of woodcuts, so I drew those. They are, in my opinion, the best part of the book. "The Squid Prefers To Remain Enigmatic" is by far my best page. I did the Sketchbook Project with the Art House Co-Op this year.
