They were inspired by feedback Elizaveta received at a then-resident artist’s talk she gave. Unintentionally, Elizaveta had included several drawings of power points and power cords in her mixed media prints in her (Grouped) exhibition. The constant questioning about her ‘power point fetish’ inspired her to explore this subject matter in the form of illustration-like drawings. Elizaveta was fascinated with the idea of combing the aesthetically pleasing quality of watercolour and ink drawings with the subtly troubling repetition of the power cord. The dysfunctional relationships of inanimate objects have remained a constant theme in Elizaveta’s practice. Imagine having a photograph of something/someone/someplace that you really love/d. You have had this photograph for years. It has travelled around the world with you, folded up tight in your back pocket. Then one day you reach into this pocket and find the forgotten old photograph. You gently unfold it and rediscover what you thought you would never forget. This series of self-portraits was inspired by the idea that most people wear different masks or amplify certain parts of their personality around different people. Around her family, Elizaveta is a keen young helper on the farm. Around her girlfriends, she is the coarse tomboy. With her lovers, she is a saucy seductress? When she is alone, she also shows different colours. Elizaveta creates her mono-prints with the aid of overhead transparencies. Using water, she transfers the ink onto paper-based surfaces. At times she works with extra mediums over the top of her prints, creating rich textural experiences. The large-scale prints are intentionally kept unframed to allow the audience to connect with Elizaveta’s vision of memory and lapsed time. This is the first body of work where Elizaveta combined printmaking and drawing for the first time. The pieces are multilayer works on paper. In each piece there is a printed element, in most it’s the photographic layer. Using inkjet ink, plastic and water Elizaveta has created these mono-prints. The drawing element can be compared to a kind of ‘mapping out’ process. From a very young age, the artist has needed to draw maps and house plans of places she visited. This helped tell stories of her adventures. When Elizaveta lived with her sister in Moscow, they had plenty of adventures in their apartment. She has used this body of work to tell stories of adventures had, and to map out her memories of the space. These pieces are conceptual illustrations for a collaborative book project Elizaveta embarked on in 2010. Elizaveta’s practice engages with layers both on an aesthetic and narrative level. As she creates water-based mono-prints combined with doodle-like drawings, she leads the audience on a narrative path that leads in several directions simultaneously. The working title for this body of work was 'The time I lived in Totnes'. Part of the inspiration was this collection of photographs that Elizaveta took in her bedroom in Totnes, England. In this body of work, Elizaveta compares apartment living to the lives of fish in aquariums. Mixing printmaking with drawing, she creates works that are dream-like in their aesthetic. Each of the prints in this series begins with a photograph of an apartment interior. Due to Elizaveta’s printmaking style, it is not always obvious what is on the paper so she lat times likes to title the works with clues. The artist hopes that her work can provide a viewing experience that triggers memories for her viewers and they can keep discovering little secrets in each piece. In early 2006, Elizaveta created a series of high-contrast black and white photographic works of a girlfriend playing at being sexy. The 2006 body of work was presented as high contrast photocopied photographs in A3, with ballpoint pen doodles over the top of the sexy girly poses. In 2011, the idea of the ‘snapshot’ inspired Elizaveta to revisit sexy photographs she took with another girlfriend in 2008. These photographs were printed using Elizaveta’s mono-printing method. Elizaveta creates her mono-prints with the aid of inkjet ink, plastic transparencies and water. She prints her inkjet plates onto plastic then transfers the image with the aid of water onto paper.
