<description>This is a project located north of Chicago concerning the restoration of Ronan Park in the neighborhood of Albany Park with the North River Commission. The people living in the neighborhood speak a total of 45 different languages. Ronan Park’s initiative is to have a unifying and inviting space that transcends language barriers in the neighborhood. This project was my response to the need of creating a more dynamic and activated environment.

The design was inspired by the idea that the park can become a stage for the community. Located in the center of the park, the mound rising from the northern clearing contains a space for sitting and a smaller mound for a performing space. By integrating wooden ledges, both the seating and performance spaces become interchangeable. The mound in the southern clearing acts as a bridge into the gardens, inviting visitors to explore new views within the park.

Walk On

Walk On was a research project exploring an individual's experience with building materials and the social implications of architectural code in Syracuse, New York. This information was designed as a poster for presentation.

Academic Urbanity

This series of diagrams were in result of a research project titled Academic Urbanity. The research investigated the relationship between the design
school and unoccupied former industrial districts in cities. The main case study analyzed the “Cermak District” located in the south side of Chicago.
These diagrams articulated the proposal to program a design school for both private educational functions and integrated public space. This would
generate more activity between students and the public in order to revitalize the area.

For my final year in school I produced my thesis In Form: Education by Design. These cartoons accented the issues being explored in design education
and the role that designers play in American culture.

DRA/2012/DRA Gallery explores the worlds of art, design, and architecture through articles, interviews and exhibitions created by students and professionals.
Started by Matthew Keeshin, director, and Jordan Mainzer, editor. Graphic and business card for editor.

Making Sense: SAIC Liberal Arts and Visual &#38; Critical Studies Undergraduate Symposium/2012/Created poster and postcards for promoting the symposium
at the Art Institute of Chicago

Third Space/2011/Hosted by the Object Design League in Chicago, Third Space was an event showcasing a collaborative experiment mediated between

OK Atelier/2010/OK Atelier was a speculative research project where I designed an interface for a free social network service specifically for architects and
designers to share work, critique, and collaborate.

This project was to rebuild the Red and Blue Chair by Gerrit Rietveld to see the relationship between contemporary living
and how the chair is still radical in this time. After building the original design, I was inspired to further explore concepts in
the design and history of the chair.

Crate poplar, pine
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105915/1944934/table.jpg" width="670" height="503" width_o="1000" height_o="752" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105915/1944934/table_o.jpg" data-mid="16785629"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

After taking a visit to the archives at the Art Institute of Chicago to see an original Rietveld chair and seeing that many of the works I had studied in books
were simply on shipping crates, I designed a table with Rietveld legs to allow the crate to be celebrated while simultaneously escalating any object into "high art."

INDPT chair pine, plywood

In the final phase of this investigation I wanted to reinterpret the original chair by designing within the restraints of the original dimensions.
This piece was exhibited in the undergraduate exhibition at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). </description>

		<description>PRAHA/WEIN

These three projects emerged from a study trip to Vienna, Austria and Prague in the Czech Republic. Organized by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts of Prague (AVU) the students were able to pursue an independent study reacting to the art and design of these two cities.

WEIN/The first city we traveled to was Vienna. In response to the historical design culture in the city, I analyzed and reinterpreted the Thonet chair, in particular Model 18. Originally constructed of bent wood material and the first chair to utilize a mass production process, I wanted to reinterpret the chair in exaggerated forms and processes. The seemingly natural organic shape would be substituted by a light steel armature where CNC-cut spheres would then be beaded onto the frame. This takes the concept of the man-made "organic" form and makes it this machine-made design artifact.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105915/1844731/chairdesign2.jpg" width="670" height="217" width_o="2048" height_o="665" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105915/1844731/chairdesign2_o.jpg" data-mid="9641369"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

PRAHA/The larger-scale project is a design for a contemporary design gallery intended for exhibitions of that field as well as installation and sculpture. The gallery addresses the issues of methods of display. Inspired by Villa Muller and the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK, Vienna) the forms that make this architectural object is a collection of horizontal pedestals. These are illuminated by floor lights that allow the volume to be a large display case. Commonly gallery spaces include several walls that make up the space, this form can utilize both the interior spaces for exhibition as well as the exterior and negative spaces between the form and site itself. People can move around the exterior looking into the interior as well as use the spaces contained by the exterior walls for new methods of exhibition. Since the site was a general gallery context, the final exhibition of the interior spaces were projected into a real gallery space as a way to question the relationships between art, architecture, and design in gallery conditions regarding exhibition and interaction.

POSTERS OF A FORMER EMPIRE
In between the primary project, I developed these posters as a response to experiencing the history of former empires in Central Europe.
With a designed typeface imitating design movements in Central Europe during the early 20th century, I wanted the words to express their actions physically.

		<description>Third Space

Hosted by the Object Design League in Chicago, Third Space was an event showcasing a collaborative experiment mediated between students from Emily Carr University in Vancouver, BC, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Each team exchanged informal instructions for a collection of designed objects, suggestive forms to be interpreted on site to create a collective space. The interpreted designs resulted in simultaneous Third Space shows in both locations. For the event in Chicago, participating artists and designers translated the inherited objects into a functional café.

Third Space was collaboratively developed. My position in this project was as curator and director. Working with the designers from both Chicago and Vancouver, it was my responsibility to narrate the process and complete the administrative tasks at hand in order to provide the platform for the event. Additionally I designed the graphic and print material for the event as well. The identity was inspired by Canadian shipping labels.

Designers: Melissa Arielle Callender/builder, Allon Libermann/designer+builder, Matthew Harrison/designer, Matthew Keeshin/curator, Morgan Brill/designer, Mike Pappas/designer+builder, and Zeke Raney/builder+dj.

<description>Text as Space &#38; Space as Text

These pieces act to create a bridge between two-dimensional and three-dimensional representations of space.
Taking the description of one of a house design, the graphics are not about how the text represents the architecture, but how the architecture defines the text.

When a person enters a home or sees a work of art, they have their own experiences. Each person reads this piece differently and will take away their own opinion.
The composition and arrangement of text acts as a site plan for the psychological space.
