Design Bridge – Dog's Bollocks Student Awards

Brief: We want you to choose a famous brand, product or service and redesign it in a
breakthrough way. Everything is up for grabs; logo, colour, shape, texture... but what we
are really looking for is a big idea.

<img src="http://payload168.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/5670094/logos_640.png" width="640" height="452" width_o="849" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload168.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/5670094/logos_o.png" data-mid="30607557" border="0" align="left"/>

Outcome: I chose to rebrand, 'Quaker Oats,' with a focus on their versatility.

Oats are such a versatile product, which is something that, 'Quaker' doesn’t capitalise
on. My rebrand aims to change this, by using the 'Quaker' brand to showcase the
many different uses of oats.

Self-initiated Project

Brief: Create a brand that can improve the cinema experience. The brand must ensure that
going to the cinema is immersive and remains an experience that allows you to escape.

<img src="http://payload168.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/5670171/marques_640.png" width="640" height="452" width_o="849" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload168.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/5670171/marques_o.png" data-mid="30608396" border="0" align="left"/>

Outcome: I produced the brand, ‘ACTION,’ which aims to stamp out poor conduct within the cinema audience, ensuring fewer distractions and disturbances from other audience members.

It aims to do this by presenting a parodied film certificate before the real one. This would show a common problem associated with the cinema experience mixed with a popular film title. This moment is key as it is the part of the experience where the audience becomes quiet and focused on the screen, a prime opportunity to convey a message.

The aim is that people read the new titles and consider how they conduct themselves during the screening. As you visit the cinema more and more, a wider understanding of the action code of conduct is built up, promoting more considerate cinema audiences.

JKR – Juice

Brief: Urban beekeepers have beehives all over our cities. From New York to London,
Tokyo to Madrid, in allotments, back gardens and even on rooftops. It is a surprising fact
that city- produced honey can be of exceptional quality, with urban bees having a more
varied diet than honey bees in the countryside.

Construct a brand for the urban beekeepers company . Create a name for them and
consider the products that may be in the range.

<img src="http://payload168.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/5669981/marque_640.png" width="640" height="452" width_o="849" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload168.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/5669981/marque_o.png" data-mid="30607124" border="0" align="left"/>

Outcome: Due to the diversity of flowers in urban cities; honey from different cities have unique flavours. I wanted to promote 'Urban Honey' for it’s ability to give the consumer a sense of place through taste, and focus on how 'Urban Honey' is shaped by the city.

ISTD – Circus Museum

Brief: You must create the name, logo and applied identity for the Museum of the Circus.
Consider its displays, activities, programme of events and so on. Is museum even the right
word to describe it? Should it capture the very essence of the history and range of Circus life?

Whatever approach you adopt, ensure you use it as a vehicle to express your typographic skills.

<img src="http://payload157.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/5450147/logo_640.png" width="640" height="452" width_o="849" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload157.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/5450147/logo_o.png" data-mid="30609392" border="0" align="left"/>

Outcome: I focused on the Circus as a real life event, which could encourage members of the community to come together in a real world setting, away from their digital lives. To achieve this I designed, ‘The Circus Academy’ – A travelling circus workshops event, with famous circus performers teaching classes and giving talks.

Trapped In Suburbia Workshop

This was a collaborative effort by Trapped in Suburbia and University College Falmouth.

Exhibition photos part 1
Exhibition photos part 2

Brief:
Part 1: Produce an art installation piece in response to the character, 'Marlena Evans' from the
soap/drama, 'Days of Our Lives.'

Part 2: Using your installation to tell a story; produce the brand and identity for, 'Marlena Evans.'

<img src="http://payload75.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/3816433/reveal_640.png" width="640" height="452" width_o="849" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload75.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/3816433/reveal_o.png" data-mid="30609972" border="0" align="left"/>
<img src="http://payload75.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/3816433/rope_640.png" width="640" height="452" width_o="849" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload75.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/3816433/rope_o.png" data-mid="30609988" border="0" align="left"/>

Outcome: My installation aims to show the unexpected/’never know what’s going to happen next’ essence of, ‘Days of Our Lives’.

At one end of the room there was a rope hanging from the ceiling, which you pull without knowing the results of that action. Symbolising the expectation and anticipation created by the show.

On the other side of the room, attached to the other end of the rope, was an ordinary box with a disco ball concealed inside it. As you walk around the exhibiton, the box lifts to reveal the disco ball at, what appears to be, random intervals. The contrast between the plain box and the disco ball reinforces the fact that with, ‘Days of Our Lives’ you never really know what you’re going to get.

I chose a disco ball because, as an object, it is symbolic of the main character, 'Marlena Evans.' It can be quite ordinary, but when the spotlight is on, it changes entirely...

<img src="http://payload75.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/3816433/branding_640.png" width="640" height="452" width_o="849" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload75.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/3816433/branding_o.png" data-mid="30609965" border="0" align="left"/>

Using this core idea, my brand for, 'Marlena Evans' focuses on the unexpected reveal. On the surface the branding is ordinary, but you can scratch this layer away to reveal the more colourful and exciting side to her character.

In addition to this, the information you reveal is hidden in unexpected locations on the stationary. This reinforces the unexpected nature of her character, and the rest of the drama.

Penguin Design Award 2012

Brief: The 2012 Penguin Design Award brief was to design a new cover for Ken Kesey's,
'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest'.

My design was shortlisted for the award.

Penguin Design Award 2012 Winners/Shortlisted Entries

<img src="http://payload75.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/3816406/IMG_1901_2_640.png" width="640" height="489" width_o="785" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload75.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/3816406/IMG_1901_2_o.png" data-mid="29439128" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload75.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/3816406/IMG_19012_640.png" width="640" height="489" width_o="785" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload75.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/3816406/IMG_19012_o.png" data-mid="29439219" border="0" align="left"/>

Outcome: My design is based on the theme of Appearance and Reality and is
comprised of two symbols. The first is the red pathway, which symbolises Nurse
Ratched. On one side she is a caring nurse, cradling the blurb, and on the other
she is oppressive, controlling the patients like puppets. The hanging O represents
McMurphy and his struggle against authority. The wires foreground this struggle
and create a protective barrier around the other characters within the title. I used
a sterile colour scheme for the cover, apart from the red pathway, which leads the
viewer’s eye, symbolising power.

Yoga Cleaning Products

Brief:You are required to brand, package and promote a new range of cleaning products
for the home, based upon the following target market,

'A clean house is a clean mind - everything we posses is an outward expression of our
inner selves.Yes, one could say 'cleanliness is next to godliness'. It is about creating karma,
a spirtual nest that you happy to invite people into, untainted by the turmoil of the world
outside. A find the process of cleaning quite cathartic, reordering the complexities of my world.'

<img src="http://payload25.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/2807372/marque_640.png" width="640" height="452" width_o="849" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload25.cargocollective.com/1/3/105759/2807372/marque_o.png" data-mid="30613017" border="0" align="left"/>

Outcome: I focused on the target markets spiritual beliefs towards cleaning. The act of
cleaning your home is not a chore for them, it is a spiritual act in which you can achieve
peace and serenity.

To appeal to this view of cleaning as a spiritual act, I produced a range of cleaning wipes
with yoga positions printed on them. This allows the target audience to fully incorporate
meditation into their cleaning regime.

Work produced for New Empress Magazine.

New Empress: 'Let’s be honest: if any of us have to read one more reheated article on
Back to the Future we’re going to go, en masse, to the nearest clock tower and pray for a
bolt of lightning. If none strikes we’ll just have to do a collective death jump. New Empress
Magazine is the film magazine that breaks convention.

These are some of the illustrations I have produced for the magazine.
