Project: Planet M Concept Store, Tolyatti, Russia
Status: On Site - Construction starts March 2012
Client: Planet M
Surface: 540sqm

www.planet-m.ru

Planet M is a chain of multi-brand, high-end fashion stores with several shopping center shops. This is their first street shop, and their Flagship.

The client looked for something sophisticated and edgy, but warm, cozy and welcoming.

Distant from the street, and at a raised level, the store wants to attract the attention of the passer-byes.
In these conditions, traditional shop windows are not necessary, so the store opens to the street showing its warm interiors through the black bricks facade, opening big windows spiked with a line of suspended lights.

The layout is defined using the different angles coming from the building itself, drawing brass lines that cut the polished concrete floors. This geometry divides the store in different areas for menswear, women, accessories, and a special 'powder-room' for the ladies changing rooms, completely involved by soft by curtains.

<img src="http://payload17.cargocollective.com/1/2/90328/2644296/4-THE-POWDERROM.jpg" width="670" height="439" width_o="2048" height_o="1341" src_o="http://payload17.cargocollective.com/1/2/90328/2644296/4-THE-POWDERROM_o.jpg" data-mid="13390021" border="0" align="left"/>

The layout is developed around a gas fireplace, positioned between menswear and women, a sort of lounge area. The fireplace and pillars are grouped in a series of different-shaded grey blocks used for product display, incorporating brushed brass niches.

This is CaSA’s entry to the competition for the renewal of Thalatta Canoe Club, Organized by Messina’s Architects Order with the Club itself.
LINK http://www.canottierithalatta.it

To design in this site means to confront oneself with the massive "presence" of the surrounding landscapes and the legendary history that has forged it. The project idea was suggested by Fata Morgana: a foreign figure and a local legend, linked to the two facing coasts but also to their crossing.

<img src="http://payload59.cargocollective.com/1/2/90328/3499295/cam01_DEF.jpg" width="670" height="444" width_o="2048" height_o="1360" src_o="http://payload59.cargocollective.com/1/2/90328/3499295/cam01_DEF_o.jpg" data-mid="18607433" border="0" align="left"/>

"Fata Morgana" is also a complex form of Mirage that makes distant landscapes optically closer, by creating an artificial horizon, higher than the real one and reflecting below this new horizon what really lies above it. Distant objects take the form of towers, spires, obelisks and the mirage may give the impression that the object is floating in the air. Hence the idea of horizontal symmetry that characterizes the building’s main body. The volumes of the new building are reflected above and below this new horizon-line, no longer at sea level, but the urban ground. A stripe that is railing and sunshade at the same time blends the elements of which the building is composed, creating the illusion of reflections. Some of these volumes, are highlighted by a change of material, stretched and tilted to subtly suggest the writing “THALATTA” on the facade: a way to clearly communicate the presence of the Club, as approaching the island.

<img src="http://payload59.cargocollective.com/1/2/90328/3499295/cam02_DEF.jpg" width="670" height="444" width_o="2048" height_o="1360" src_o="http://payload59.cargocollective.com/1/2/90328/3499295/cam02_DEF_o.jpg" data-mid="18607447" border="0" align="left"/>

The old building was the result of over a century of juxtaposed interventions. Functional flexibility and dynamism are the pivots around which the new Club is designed. We suggest the removal of existing structures and its reconstruction.
The design of the new central building starts with a series of volumes with different degrees of transparency that form a single bigger one. The idea of creating a relationship between interior and exterior is crucial and translates in alternating solid and glazed surfaces volumes. In the main building both floors of are defined by a series of volumes that host different functions and that can be considered as the keystone of the dynamism and flexibility of new spaces. Some of them are cabinets to perform bioclimatic tasks; others are furniture storage allowing changes of the functional layout, while still others are architectural elements in itself, like the bar or the wardrobe.

The upper floor hosts the new multifunctional Hall (300 m²), conceived as a flexible, transparent zone, able to host different types of events: conferences, exhibitions, receptions and tournaments. A lounge area and a bar zone, designed according to the views of the surrounding landscape delimit the hall in its two extremes. A 140 square meters terrace is designed as the exteriors continuation of the inner space.
The fading parapet in etched glass blurs the separation between the terrace and the sea and evoking the idea of mirage. The same item, mirrored horizontally by the ceiling line, creates a brise-soleil shielding the Sport Club at lower floor, where the distribution allows the athletes to train overlooking the surrounding landscape.
A new kitchen, linked to the great hall on the first floor, features in a separate volume.

MATERIALS

The materials acquire an important value in terms of communicating the concept. They are simple and traditional but able to express an edgy feel and the bioclimatic and ecological essence of it.

-	The teak wood timber that clads the volumes with sloping roof, recalls nautical environments. Wood is the archetypal material of some Mediterranean coastal architecture. We propose it to continue with this tradition and for its ecological qualities: employed as ventilated facade, it allows the reduction of temperature excursion inside the building.

-	The white perforated metal panels want to create an image that is both traditional and contemporary. This material is also used as a cladding for lower volumes and as sliding louver panels, designed in accordance with a more contemporary language to create a rarefied building, inspired by mirages and mists typical of Fata Morgana’s mythology.

<img src="http://payload59.cargocollective.com/1/2/90328/3499295/prosp veranda color.jpg" width="670" height="437" width_o="2048" height_o="1337" src_o="http://payload59.cargocollective.com/1/2/90328/3499295/prosp veranda color_o.jpg" data-mid="18608047" border="0" align="left"/>

-	Glass surfaces are designed with varying levels of transparency and partially etched; they contribute to create an idea of fog and rarefaction. Etched glass is also used for the element of parapet/brise-soleil that conceptually indicates the horizon line: a linguistic device to give the building an atmosphere of lightness and suspension. Transparent glass is also used; being glass a non-material material it allows the public to enjoy the breathtaking views, while it is also makes the new Thalatta Club a glass-box visible from the outside: a floating lantern, moored on the banks of the city, a landmark easily recognizable in the skyline of Messina.

CLIMATIC FEATURES
"The House is the third skin of Man" (Karl E. Lotz, bioarchitecture theorist).

In addition to solar panels covering the South-oriented sloping roofs and able to collect over 50% of the energy the new Club demands, the project includes “solar chimneys”, aimed at improving the ventilation of the building using the principle of natural rise of hot air and allowing the cooling of spaces, also improving air circulation. The design takes further advantage of a system for natural transversal ventilation, made possible by the dual use of sliding glass doors and perforated louver panels that open completely and allow to increase the air flow.
Finally the idea of the fog, architecturally translated with partially etched glass, becomes opportunity to use shielding windows that allow a reduction up to 80% of infra reds (that means a temperature reduction of 6-9 ° C) and up to 99.5 - 99.9 of UV rays, making the environment healthier for people and objects.

Project: Holiday house for a writer
Status: Unbuilt
Client: Private

This house project was proposed for a ground situated on a cliff at over 70 metres above sea level in the south side coast of the island.

The scheme it's developed on two levels, physically separated by exterior spaces, something not unusual on the island. The upper level includes guest rooms, offices, banquets room, kitchen, services and garage. The Lower level hosts and living room, studio and bedrooms, and a special 'sunset room'.

Great care and attention was put in following the ground levels, and saving the existing trees, literally building the spaces around them. Another priority was to open the rooms to the exterior completely. In order to achieve it, a system of vertically sliding windows opens the rooms to the exterior, resulting in an almost outdoor home.

Project: House, workshop and studio
Status: Advanced
Client: Chris and Syra Larkin
www.chrislarkinguitars.com
www.syralarkin.com

Developed with Architect Katia Casella, this house for a family of two on the West coast of Ireland included a workshop for Chris Larkin, guitarmaker and a studio for his wife Syra who's a painter.

Built in the landscape in order to be confused with the typology of a traditional farm, red hay-barn, dry stone wall and caravan included, all the references and materials used are found on the territory.

Environmental issues molded heavily the project, not only for the will of architects and clients to have a low impact on the environment and an energy saving building, but also because of the extreme weather conditions of the area, a peninsula beaten by the wind. Energetic self sufficiency was necessary due to the continuous electricity blackouts provoked by wind and salt corroding and throwing the light lines.

Special attention has been payed to landscape, views, shelter from wind, creating different filters and layers between 'inside' and 'outside' through courtyards, corner windows, fixed glass panes and opening timber doors.

Project: Multilabel Luxury Store
Status: Built
Client: Planet M Russia

The shop, located in a shopping centre, was designed and built in 2006 for the russian chain Planet M, that sells luxury brands.
The brief was to create a modern yet classy environment,
divided between women and menswear.
Blocks of dark wengué timber grow throughout the store,
and brake, to reveal matt gold interiors, used to display the items. The same language is used in the long monoliths that forms the central furniture.

Project: Brand Flagship Store
Status: Built
Client: Skunkfunk clothing company
www.skunkfunk.com

The store, first of a series for the Basque company Skunkfunk, is located in central Plaza Nueva, an arched square in the old part of Bilbao.
It is concieved as the abstraction through geometry of two natural environment, the forest, on the ground floor and an underground landscape for the basement.
Green and white, colours of the label, are used to define two different levels, linked through the color white and two vertical connection: a double height mirror wall and a glass staircase sided by a greenwall with live plants, that bring the visitors to the lower level. The space, heavily populated by stone pilars, has been trasformed into a clean, brighter space through the use of neutral colours, in a geometrical game reminiscent of geological levels.

At the very end of it, a "special room", visibile from the ground level through the mirrors, with irregular, geometrical walls and ceiling, hosts product the label migth want to higlight, and an projected animation produced especially for the store.

The furniture has two concept merging into eachother: light bidimensional forms, inspired by natural shapes are drawn with white tubes, in opposition to heavy and solid pieces in a natural material such as wood, cut into geometrical irregular shapes.

Project: New industrial building, cellars, laboratory, store and wine tasting area
Status: First phase
Client: Bodegas Dardell, Bio Winemakers, Gandesa
www.dardell.es

Developed in partnership with interior designer Toni Ferré, this project is situated on a hill overlooking acres of vineyards. The young wine company produces biological wine and has spacial attention on the environment and the nature surrounding.
The clear priority of the brief are the exceptional views onto the surrounding landscape and its relation with the wine produced and sold in the building.
It was also important to create a brand image and identity for the wine label.

Buildings include the production area, directly connected to the vineyards, cellars for wine aging, storage rooms, the enologist's laboratory, a shop and an impressive wine tasting room with breathtaking views.
Built partially within the slope of the hill to create the ideal wine-aging conditions cellars and sided by mediterranean pine-tree woods, the building is clad in vertical pine tree timber slats, that gradually open to the landscape, leaving the wine tasting room completely open to the wonderful landscape.

The interor layouts are the result of shifting timber volumes and glass walls, anticipating the views gradually until they are revealed once accessed the wine tasting room.

It's a project that stimulates all senses, suggests the relation between wine and the local environment, by using the ground, the pine trees, the surroundings as materials to underline how the quality of the product is rooted its territory.

Project: Apartment complete rehabilitation
Status: Built
Client: Private
Surface: 98sqm

This apartment, conceived for a young professional bachelor, occupies one floor of the 'W De Koninck's Building' (1968), one of the last projects of great Belgian modernist and constructivist architect Louis Herman De Koninck overlooking Avenue Louise in Brussels city centre. The character and history of the building was taken in consideration, as the desire of both client and architects was to recover the rationality of the original concept, lost as it was turned into offices.

The main priority when this project was undertaken was to exploit the brightness of the huge windows in such a way that no part of the considerably lengthy floor plan was left without natural light. In order to achieve this, glazed partitions with different levels of opacity have been used as walls. Curtains of varied thickness have been used for light control and to preserve intimacy.

The original open-plan layout was to be maintained whilst creating space for: a living room, a small studio, kitchen, bathroom, a wardrobe that doubles as guest room and a master bedroom overlooking the quiet courtyard and a large tree.

Irregularities have been streamlined and converted into various utility features such as the toilet and laundry room, making for a cleaner and more rational space. The functions of a traditional bathroom have been split between two different spaces: a more private space containing the W.C, and a glazed, elongate shower-room adjacent to the bedroom.

The project aimed at maximizing possibilities within a relatively tight budget through a clever use of materials and layout.
