Dark Cloud, 2012
Blackened polyester batting, red cellophane

[In the lesser populated hills of southwest Washington, I was running. We all were. I gathered my team and we raced down one particularly large hill, cans of Redi Whip clasped in our hands and ready for battle. My compatriots were already fighting our invisible threat when we reached the valley below and I watched as one man shot his gun into the sky. His firepower combined with the darkness of our enemies to create a large black cloud burning from its core. Knowing we were no match for such a thing, I attempted to escape. But the winds were too strong and soon the fire cloud was directly above me. I felt my soul pulling from my body, up into that sinister cloud, and I slowly began to lose consciousness. A friend reached for my hand and I tried to focus all remaining energy on the last physical hold I left to that world.]

Frozen Dinosaur, 2012
Plastic dinosaur figurine encased in ice

[I was on an expedition in Antarctica with silent film icon Rudolph Valentino. In our parkas, we weathered the storm, with Valentino constantly pushing forward through the snow. When we could no longer bear the cold wind, we ducked inside an ice cave. Valentino was excited by something he saw in the crystals. He immediately sawed into an immaculate, ancient sheet—with great care, he extracted a dinosaur, no larger than a few inches, perfectly preserved in ice. Valentino, vain as always, salivated at the fame that surely awaited him back home. I, meanwhile, took my glove off, and pressed a thumbprint onto the ice, defacing the discovery.]

Potato Calavera
Acrylic paints, russet potato

[The Earth had fallen off its normal orbital path. In the dark of night, I left my house to find a middle-aged Italian man sporting a bushy mustache and greasy tanktop in the driver’s seat of a 1980s BMW sawed in half. He held equestrian reins that were connected to the engine. Though he whipped and whipped, the split car was on cinderblocks, immobile. Accompanying him in the vehicle were a half dozen beautiful, tanned women in sequined mini dresses, ready for the hottest clubs in Chinatown. Even in their stagnant state, they laughed maniacally. I walked back to my house. An Asian girl in a similarly skimpy outfit hobbled past me with a broken heel and drunkenly told me I was “kinda cute.” With my back turned, the sun rose very quickly. The planet was falling into it. As everything caught fire, I saw a russet potato calavera baking and bubbling on my driveway. It was the end of the world.]

Cream Pie, 2002
Aluminum foil, store-bought chocolate cream pie

[It was parent-teacher night and my family and I had just pulled up to my middle school. As we made our way around the parking lot, a dark car pulled up next to us, and a man signaled for us to roll down the window. My dad obliged and was immediately greeted with a cream pie to the face. Infuriated, my three family members and I jumped out of the car and made haste after the two pie-throwing bandits who had now entered the school. Running down the hall, I saw friends and teachers chatting in every room we pass. Soon, the two men rounded a corner and upon reaching the next hallway, we were met not with them but instead two large creatures. They shouted that every exit had been blocked and that each person in the school would soon die. "If you would like to be with your families at this time, please gather accordingly and prepare to be devoured." Accepting this as my fate, I waited in line with my parents and younger sister. Then, nothingness. Death. Instantly, I was alive again and without my family, but in the same situation. Once again, I accepted my fate and waited my turn to be consumed. Instead of coming back to life, I then found myself in a small room with checkered floors and walls made of clouds. There were a few tables here and there, and people who looked vaguely familiar milled about. I approached someone who looked like my friend, only to see a sticker on their chest that read "Hello, my name is -------." They weren't who I thought. I looked down at my own chest to see a similar tag and a different name than my own.]
