<description>On my days off I usually find myself replicating movie and video game props or taking on projects for my extremely diverse group of friends and family. Everything from a spice rack for my girlfriend to a prop robot for a video game photo shoot has come through my shop. My friends family and clients know I am more than up for the task and I'm more than happy to help.

MKII
This little prop robot was commissioned for a video game photo shoot. Dimensions of the piece needed to be extrapolated from game play dialog, screen captures, and promotional artwork alone. Once the specs were all assembled production utilized simple inexpensive but durable materials as to ensure the safety of the prop through the, at times, rough photo shoot.

Laser Marquetry
A gift of lap drawing tables for my triplet cousins. Using a laser cutter I cut out pieces of wood of differing colors and inlayed and laminated them together. To finish I applied a clear coat varnish to make them easier to clean.

My Heart
Emotion plays the most prominent role in our human experience and it should always play a role in design. Love is an emotion that can be in one moment fickle and the next everlasting. This work is donated to everyone out there who is searching for their missing pieces.
Construction was accomplished by laminating cabinet plywood and CNC routing out the 3D modeled form. The pieces were then drafted, cut out, and sanded before undergoing a time intensive finishing process.

Reclaimed Wood Spice Rack
Sometimes it's not complexity, not ornament, not lavish finishes that makes something captivating. This simple spice rack was constructed out of scrap and found material for my girlfriend. It's simple but with a few key choices I feel like I came out extremely elegant and beautiful.

<description>Due to the nature of the projects and the non disclosure agreements that are still in effect I am only allowed to discuss my involvement with this company and the products we designed and engineered during in person, or phone interviews.
If you would like to hear and see more please feel free contact me.

In my position I lead coordinated internship efforts that assembled the first ever engineering division of this company. This included attainment, organization, and modification of a space that we would use as our makeshift engineering and project R &#38; D department.

The pictures below are images of the work space that was orchestrated. Our lab, code named "Los Alamos" was transformed from a empty drawing room to an exciting and creative environment that included devoted spaces for idea generation, model making, and rapid prototyping as well as testing and final presentations.

<description>The University of Minnesota currently uses a varying mixture of biodiesel in its diesel vehicle fleet. This biodiesel used however is being produced off site and from virgin oil sources. Meanwhile, the University produces a staggering amount of waste cooking oil that they pay to be removed. With systems analysis I led a team of engineers to determine that a simple solution was available.

<description>In the fall of of 2009 I started work with a small open source program called Blender. It is a free 3D modeling, animation, and rendering suite that is notoriously hard to learn. Interest in this program rose so quickly in the field of design that I was one of the few people who knew how to use the program well enough to demonstrate its usage. I was commissioned by various instructors and professors to come and give guest lectures illustrating not only the usage of Blender but also the benefits of open source software over more expensive proprietary options.

<description>In this project we were asked to work with a school to devise and create a educational game tailored to suit their needs. The school our group was assigned was a large school close to downtown St Paul. We volunteered with the university and job placement advisers of the school and quickly realized the problems the students and the faculty were facing. Graduation rates were lower than desired and college attendance rates where even lower. At the exact same time budgets were getting cut in these very same areas.
We started our project with a very simple concept, we would make the game that could be used to provide the students with a better idea of their job options and the milestones required to attain them. One thing we said from the very beginning was that the game MUST be first and foremost fun. Understanding that the game would never be played if it wasn’t fun was the basis for this paradigm. In order to provide 2 levels of assistance we produced two games geared towards shorter and longer spans of playing time. The first, short play, game we produced was Captions, a portmanteau of Career and Options. The second geared for long play and a more thorough assessment was Skysis (Skill + Analysis).

<description>During my time as a T.A. for Toy Design I worked with a group of what I consider to be the most talented people at the University. In our group of teaching assistants alone we had expertise in industrial design, graphic design, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, and product design. I was hired for my knowledge of tools and workshop procedure as well as rapid prototyping strategies but also brought knowledge in architectural design and bioproducts engineering. Throughout the course students produced toys ranging in complexity from pull toys that illustrated their initial proficiency with hand and basic power tools to fully functioning prototypes utilizing laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC mills and thermoplastic vacuum forming.

<description>In the world of biology there is nothing more fragile and sensitive than the young. In order to turn an adult swine facility into a farrowing or pig birthing facility extensive calculations and modifications needed to be done.
Throughout the process we tailored the thermodynamic properties of the structure to accommodate the new (rather adorable) residents.

A section cut scale model of the facility was produced, the model represented the end of a long facility with many repeated bays.

<description>In the fall of 2008 the Association for Computer Aided Design In Architecture (ACADIA) chose Rapson Hall as the site for its international conference. As a precursor to the event, I was invited as part of a team of students to participate in the production of a temporary installation to service the media needs of the conference. The project had biomimicry as its initial muse but was allowed to evolve in any way we saw fit.

<description>Biology has been perfecting its systems for billions of years. Designers would do well to take at least a cursory glance if not full inspiration from it.

This project looked into the necessity of a new system to protect structures from natural disasters such as hurricanes and tidal waves as well as manmade pressures such as terrorist attacks. By looking at armor that has remained practically unchanged throughout the ages, shark scales provide an extremely well honed example of a system that can resist water, impacts, and other forces.

In this analysis I produced multiple three dimensional models and renderings as well as the final production process which required the assistance of a powder bed three dimensional printer.
