George Segal's famous sculpture of five forlorn men waiting at a bread line during the Great Depression was the backdrop of a modern-day bread line (bagel halves, pound cake and assorted sweets, actually) at Wednesday's opening breakfast at The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse for Art Basel VIPs.

But the artwork that had everyone talking was an open garbage can filled with all sorts of debris -- paint cans, bottles, a chewed-up piece of gum, and a crushed plastic cup of Cuban coffee -- that popped up out of the can and played music.

8 Million Stories (2009), commissioned by collector Martin Z. Margulies, is a collaboration between artist David Ellis and musician Roberto Lange, who is responsible for the garbage's Latin beat.

``I'm here to make sure nobody throws anything in there because they all think it's real garbage,'' said Valecia Stevens, one of the women from the nearby Lotus House shelter who work at the Margulies Collection during Art Basel, and for whom the collector hosts annual fundraisers.
