SFTOC will be 10 years old this May 4th, and the Volkov Commanders have been busy, holding a séance day and night, summoning the spirits of Sounds From the Other City festival from years gone by. They’ve been meddling with the minds of innocent bystanders, re-birthing them as living, breathing, rabble rousing, incarnations of the symbols and characters that have appeared on the festival’s posters over the past decade.

The characters have been turned loose, running amuck on Salford’s Chapel Street. Beware, festival goers! What will happen at SFTOC 2014?

To celebrate 10 years of Sounds from the Other City, Festival art directors, The Volkov Commanders, are bringing to life all the different characters from the festival’s iconic posters over the years – and they need you to be part of the show. For this very special occasion, the Festival’s most fabulous will be transformed into costumed characters who will run amok though the Festival on Sunday 4 May. It’s your chance to get involved and get a free ticket to Salford’s biggest party!

Do you want to be a part of SFTOC history in 2014? Do you love dressing up and dancing around and generally having a great time? Is your favourite thing to wear on a night out a giant eyeball costume? Even if you got seriously sweaty from dancing too much would you keep your costume on and party till the end? And would you like a free ticket to SFTOC?

If so, The Volkov Commanders want to hear from you.

To celebrate 10 years of Sounds from the Other City the Volkov Commanders are returning from their moonbase to art direct this year’s festival. We are looking for people to participate in a huge performance piece that will last the duration of the festival. We are looking for committed people to wear costumes that we will make while you are out enjoying the festival.

About the Volkovs

The Volkov Commanders are artists and makers Anna Beam, Aliyah Hussain, and Mariel Osborn who have been working together since 2010 under the guise of the Volkov Commanders, a multi disciplinary performance collective of moon beings sent down to earth to dazzle and interact with the human race. From their base at Islington Mill in Salford they have performed and directed events internationally, always keen to collaborate with other artists and musicians. They have performed with the Royal Standard at the Liverpool Biennial, The Castlefield Gallery, at Hangar in Barcelona, and have received Micro Commission grants from Cornerhouse. In October 2013 they were resident artists at Flux Factory in New York City, and co-directed an ambitious performance event with NYC based collective CHERYL at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. They are ongoing collaborators with Toronto based new media artist Jeremy Bailey on his Master/Slave Invigilation System, which first debuted at the AND festival in 2012 and has since been performed in Berlin, Brussels, and the Bauhaus Design School in Dessau.Their role as art directors of Sounds From The Other City 2014 follows on from past creative collaborations with directors of the festival, most notably 'Orbit: A Show in Seven Parts', in 2013.
