Give Bad Hair a Good Name
Give Bad Hair a Good Name / Arthur Licker
Del 22 de Abril al 20 de Mayo de 2010
Somehow there is no Spanish word for ‘mullet’, the haircut that is short on top and long at the back. And yet you just have to wander through Gràcia to see that Barcelona is where the mullet retired to after a long life in Eastern Europe and American wrestling.
If you ask the locals about the ugly and yet strangely hypnotic mullet, you are unlikely to find any answers. Some will completely deny the mullet’s existence. Others will admit a recent sighting - and then swear there’s no word for it. Oh how ironic that the bad hair capital has no name for this icon of bad hair!
Social anthropologist and artist Arthur Licker examines the Barcelona mullet in this series of paintings. Based on real mullets, he assigned each subject a name. However, what is missing is the most important name of all - the name for the mullet itself.
Because even bad hair deserves a good name.
