Selecție personală, 2014 -ongoing

Personal Selection” is a serie of workshops that intends to recover images of vernacular photography and to work both in the direction of social anthropology investigation, history and also to try to understand what anonymus photography is.

The extended framework, “Personal Selection” - the book that will be made by the gallery visitors in the workshop, along with Nicoleta Moise´s artist book “Nu-mi place numai marea, dar și muntele!”, continues the series begun by Galeria Posibilă in 2009 with Petite Histoire, linking different views and approaches to the anonymous photography in Romania.

Having provided nearly 2000 anonymous photos, a copier and reams of paper, we launch the invitation to become authors of your own book, with your own selection of photos.

"Not only the seaside, but I like the mountains too!"*

200 photographs dating from the 60's-70's, found on the staircase of a building in Bucharest.
Appearing in every shot, Mrs. M is the central piece of the story and the author of the statement that makes up the title (of this collection). Mrs. M dominates every shot, neutralizing the touristic ambience of the location. Together with the photographer, she practices a kind of tourism using the locations not as (freestanding) monuments, but more as a background for her own portrait(s).

Every photograph in the archive has two corresponding shots, with minor observable differences between them, usually a change in Mrs. M. pose. The cinematic effect, relieved by the capturing of two very close moments in time, stimulates the viewer's imagination to fill up the missing parts between them. In the few seconds between the first and the second shot, she changes her position and talks a few words or just exchanges glances with the photographer.

"Nu-mi place numai marea, dar și muntele!" is not only an open invitation for reconstructing the context of the archive, but also an analysis of the relation between a portrait photograph and a touristic photograph, both having a common potential of being seen as monument. Nicoleta Moise
