This is my book cover design for the Puffin Design Award brief. The book this year was James and the Giant Peach.

Began by experimenting with different type. No real direction of reasoning behind the type I eventually chose. I then re-read the synopsis of the book and read “As the sun rises, the inhabitants of the giant peach see glimmering skyscrapers peeking above the clouds...”. This led to a sketch for the back cover of skyscrapers breaking through clouds.

My idea for the front page came after reading “The seagulls are then tied to the broken stem of the fruit...... The mass of seagulls lifts the giant peach into the air and away from the sharks.....”. I then sketched the title being lifted out of the sea by these “strings”.

Type used was hand drawn and then penned in Illustrator. Back cover blurb text is Gill Sans.
