Hortas Di Pobreza // Documentary
Winding your way over dirt roads and goat trails in the South of Guinea-Bissau, you may stumble upon Pobreza, an isolated 'balanta' village at the edge of a remote sea-encroached peninsula. Seemingly lost in time and surrounded by thick forest, this tiny village is nevertheless no stranger to the economic dynamics of global markets. The bags that once left here bursting with 'arroz di bolanha', the local denomination for rice, now carry the new gold of the land: cashew nuts. “Djintis ka tem gós!” The children of the land are migrating. Left behind in Pobreza are wrinkled hands, placing their hope in the new cashew orchards, the nut that they produce but do not themselves eat.

Hortas di Pobreza is a documentary film about local roots in a age of global exchange. Showing the life of a rural comunity of balanta farmers, living in the remote south of Guinea Bissau, where its inhabitants deal with social transformation processes due to global trade economy and its interests.

We have made this film voluntarily without financial support The production team supported it by its own means.
