This residential structure is for an artist who is going blind, and a musician who is going deaf. The building holds living quarters and studios for each person.

The program requires the residents to help each other as they cope with losing the one sense they rely on for their livelihood and enjoyment. The architecture attempts to assist in the endeavor. Various elements around the house use visuals and sound to guide the residents around the building.

The overall form was derived from the site itself: a small valley in Avila Beach, CA. The large concrete masses that saddle the structure provide thermal mass and as a marker for any flooding that has and might occur.
