WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HUMAN
AS OF LATE
Much of my research and conceptual ideas have been profoundly influenced by the landscape of Iceland. My experiences have evolved into random portrait studies. I have invited my subjects to immerse themselves into small performative gestures that I have initiated by asking them to wear a specific mask I have created. In this manner they transform, transpose and project perhaps this relationship to nature, its fragility and the biology of living things.
The dialectic between a pure and primordial past and the excesses of modern life is as quintessential as the practice of Joseph Beuys or Kiki Smith and their lifelong interest in nature myths, pre-Christian rituals, symbols and their passion for the forest, the landscape and the romantic or gothic notion of nature.
My work is as multitudinous as the layers of the Icelandic landscape and its myths, its smells and its sounds. It can also be a meditation on the psyche of things, the morphology of objects and vegetation.
