Dumbo Arts Festival
Three variations of "Oy!" three consecutive days
Over various lengths of time (i.e. 10 mins., 30 mins., 50 mins.), I place nearly fifty kippot* on my head, one after the other. I sit still for over forty minutes holding the stack of hats on my head. This action transforms me into a live sculpture, gradually altering my posture due to the hats' weight.
Other outcomes of the performance include the falling of the hats and the repeated action of stacking and re-stacking them on my head or my kneeling down on the floor to kiss each of them before picking them up.
Oy!, drawn from the yiddish expression for excitement or pain, taps into several issues regarding faith and tradition. The repetitive gesture questions the imposition of religion on an individual and the "quantity" of faith needed to survive within society. The alteration of my posture through the action comments on how the religious institution and pressures from inherited tradition may alter our live's path at times and even impose on us unnecessary emotional distress as opposed to happiness.
*plural for kipa (yarmulke or jewish religious head cover)
