James L Tucker’s work reflects his upbringing amongst the creeks and woods of his grandparents Christmas tree farm in rural New Jersey. Surrounded by a close knit family whose stories of past friends` and adventures evolved in his young imagination became a personal folklore. A mythos that has played it’s way into his current life, where factual stories and stretched truths became memories.
Over the years the woods and creeks that were his sanctuary have become million dollar homes, the once close knit family drifts away, and truth is shed on stories that were constructed. James’ work embraces the fable that he once believed but it also delves in the destruction of the old ways.
James repurposes images simple objects of his past to create a narrative. All together they represent the story of the construction and destruction of his childhood and individually the pieces become a totems of his past.

James L. Tucker was born in 1984 in Red Bank, NJ.
In 2003 he attended Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL. In the summer of 2005 he was awarded a scholarship to study at Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art in Pont-Aven, France. James received his BFA in printmaking in 2007 from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD.
James’ interest in printmaking stems from his prior vocational school training as a graphic designer. In college he was inspired by the works of Ed Ruscha, Sister Corita, and Jim Sheridan of Hatch Show Print. James now chooses to use the centuries old techniques of woodcuts, engraving, and letterpress to produce tactile and accessible works of art.
Most recently James’ works have included process technical drawings of future projects. These pieces are inspired by his childhood drafting lessons given by his mother on their dining table.
Over the past decade his works have been exhibited and procured by private collectors in New York City, Miami, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Aspen CO, Tampa, Nashville, Sarasota, Baltimore, Pont-Aven France, and Asbury Park NJ.
James now lives and works in San Francisco, CA.
