This project is an experiment in narrating news and contemporary political happenings in a form suitable to children / grown-ups. The plan is to write and produce visual material in order to share facts and gags with other kids. This aims to form a collection of written articles integrated with simple and ironic inked illustrations in a handy physical format.
There is a great need of educative information nowadays, especially about what is going on right now in the world. The key of this project is that, instead of focusing on historical happenings of the past, we will talk about contemporary history, especially regarding controversial and political matters. It’s an attempt to look the world around us as a kid would: finding just what is funny or just bleaah.

One of my childhood favorite book series was Horrible Histories. I still believe I learned more from those books than at school. This is a quote from the first author, Terry Deary:
“if I had it my way, I wouldn’t have schools at all. They don’t educate, they just keep kids off the streets. But my books educate, because they prepare kids for life…It’s outrageous, why don’t we start telling children the truth about history? I hope my books do just that.”

The first number, named ‘Sparking the Arab Spring’, narrates the story of Mohammed Bouazizi, the 26 years old Tunisian who set himself in fire, giving the initial sparkle to the Tunisian Revolution. Writer of this issue is Francesco Neto, a history student in Bologna, Italy. Together with James Maynard Fry (a londoner, primary school teacher) we translated the writing in order to make the text more fluent for kids. I designed and illustrated the piece with black ink drawings.

Schiaffo Edizioni

Schiaffo Edizioni is a young and new publisher based in Bologna, Italy. They are specialized in small leaflets of illustration and narrative. the french artist Mœbius inspired me in creating a small tale which doesn’t need words, but that can instead be interpreted by the viewer. This was my proposal for a schiaffo book.
