Elysium Implant

Project Overview
This is my graduating project inspired by George Orwell's 1984. The goal of this project is to create opportunities for people to reflect on their relationship with technology. By creating humorous yet provocative scenarios, the project explores various possibilities on a hypothetical human-to-mobile device interface. Through this playful exploration, the audience is given a chance to find new perspective on their relationship with technology.

The project involved Graphic Designers, Animator, Film Makers, and Actors. They were very excited to be part of the project and offered their services for free.

Branding
I came up with a medical company (Owell Medical Technology Corporation) that markets implantable technology with social media capability. The Elysium brand is one that is youthful, cutting edge, and carefree.

Implant Specification
The specification is inspired by emerging technologies such as the implantable yeast fuel cell developed by UBC and the implantable RFID chip.

Featured Applications
Mobile App is the bridge between lifestyle and mobile device. I created apps to link the Elysium to the everyday life. Essentially, I see creating applications as another way of telling a narrative: 1) Fertility Monitor (sex/birth), 2) Blood Alcohol Monitor (Big Brother & self-control), 3) Digital Wallet (Emotional economy), and 4) DeathWatch (existential questions).

Fertility Monitor
The implant collects the user’s body temperature and Hormone levels. Build-in software determines the optimal fertility period and alerts the user’s spouse for conception through customizable MMS/SMS.

Blood Alcohol Monitor
Every implant comes pre-installed with the Blood Alcohol Monitor software. Working with the user’s mobile device, the implant determines the local legal blood alcohol limit for driving and gives the user’s blood alcohol level in real time.

Digital Wallet
The unique identification of the implant coupled with your own biodata makes it a secure method of payment. Simply tap your hand at a self-checkout to complete your transaction, and the receipt is stored in the implant.

DeathWatch
What will happen with your online accounts after you die? The implant manages your digital content on the Internet. If your heart stops for more than five minutes, the implant terminates your pre-determined accounts and posts your eulogy on the internet.
