In October 2006, National Association of Schools of Art And Design hosted in Minneapolis, Minnesota what they titled Post-Meeting Exploratory Seminar on the Future of Design and Design Education. Design educator Meredith Davis developed a smart tool to help guide a discussion at the meeting. The Perception and Values Spectrum presents a set of design issues including
nature of a design practice
scale of a design problem
criteria for design evaluation
concept of design success
nature of professional development

One might think of one end of the perception spectrum as representing 20th century values (A). One might think of the other end of the perception spectrum as representing 21st century values (B).

We ask: should we now be past the point of believing that 20th century values have any relevance to 21st century concerns? If one considers that designing is a process of creative problem finding, problem solving, and solution making, it is worth remember the familiar Albert Einstein comment that “we can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them”.
