Design & Development
Design
In the design and development stage assessments are developed for each skill and subskill. The assessment will measure the learners ability to perform the skills. Emphasis is put on directly relating the kind of skills to the assessment requirements.
In the Piano Tabs design, we designed assessments based on the type of skill. For example, a matching activity is required when the skill involves memorizing, and practice songs are given when the skills involves performance of the chords. In a sense, this step demonstrates how we designed with the end in mind.
For the design analysis we also considered the instructional sequence and began drafting the instructional materials.

Development
Based on the information from analysis and design, we developed the materials into a paper-based, self-instructional instructional packet. The strategies we used emphasized learning such as the use of activities to focus attention, present new content with examples and demonstration, learner participation, and assessment.
The Piano tabs unit included a learner guide, practice test and final test, and it was organized into 11 objectives. MP3 recordings of piano tabs being played were also included in the packet (listen to an MP3 recording below).
