O tema do próximo número da revista Dédalo define-se pela recusa da abstracção e generalização de princípios, meios e fins no processo arquitectónico. Considerando a interacção e participação locais como elementos fundamentais para a reflexão, decisão e acção sobre a cidade, pretendemos incentivar uma abordagem directa e real baseada na colaboração entre habitantes e profissionais. Desta forma, a ideia de pré-existência assentará, não só nas características físicas do lugar mas também nas condições e aspirações daqueles que o habitam e se adaptam a ele continuamente.
A valorização do conhecimento dos habitantes, as subtilezas e particularidades específicas de um lugar, invisíveis ou incompreensíveis ao olhar externo, servem aqui como ponto de partida para a produção de espaços que reavivem a interacção e o diálogo entre vizinhos.
Who lives next door? é, assim, a pergunta que se destaca, instigando uma reflexão crítica sobre distâncias e formas de interacção social, bem como o seu papel na construção da realidade actual. É, por isso, importante perceber o porquê do “declínio do homem público” , transpondo e transportando limites e potencialidades provenientes do virtual para a materialização da cidade contemporânea.
Procuramos explorar uma abordagem multidisciplinar que permita abrir a discussão arquitectónica a profissionais de diversas áreas, entendendo a pluralidade de visões, prioridades e valores como algo enriquecedor e fundamental para uma visão abrangente e multifacetada da cidade enquanto espaço colectivo. A apreensão e transformação do lugar adquire, deste modo, um carácter contínuo mas não linear, variando de acordo com as potencialidades de uma realidade específica e com a visão individual e colectiva daqueles que a propõem transformar.
Who Lives Next Door? pretende, assim, valorizar a inclusão do cidadão no processo criativo, optimizando os meios através dos quais este pode ter uma voz activa e participativa na criação e transformação do espaço público, contribuindo de forma real e consequente para o desenvolvimento de novas práticas e métodos na arquitectura contemporânea.

The subject of the next issue is defined by the refusal of abstraction and generalization of principles, means and purposes, in the architectural process. Considering local interaction and participation as key elements for the reflection, decision and action taking place in the city, we want to encourage a direct and real approach based on the cooperation between inhabitants and professionals. Thus, the idea of pre-existence will be based, not only on the physical structures of the place, but also on the conditions and desires of those who live there and adapt to it continuously.
The appreciation of the inhabitants’ knowledge and the specific subtleties and particularities of a place, invisible or incomprehensible to the outsider, are used here as a starting point to produce spaces that bring to life the interaction and dialog between neighbors.
Who Lives Next Door? is, thus, the question that stands out, encouraging a critical reflection about distances and ways of social interaction, as well as their role in the construction of the current reality. Therefore, it is important to understand the 'why' behind "the fall of the public man”, transferring and moving limits and potential from the virtual to the embodiment of the contemporary city.
We explore a multidisciplinary approach that allows opening the architectural discussion to professionals of several areas, thus understanding the plurality of views, priorities and values as something enriching and fundamental for a broader and multilayered perspective of the city as a collective space. The apprehension and transformation of the place acquires a continuous, but not linear, nature, varying according to the potential of a specific reality and with the individual and collective point of view of those who offer to transform it.
Thus, Who Lives Next Door? intends to value the inclusion of citizens in the creative process, optimizing the means through which they can have an active and participative say in the creation and transformation of the public space, contributing actively and consequently for the development of new practices and methods in the contemporary architecture.
