Kingless Kingdom
Kingless Kingdom

Since childhood and during my studies, I became enthusiastic, and some might say even a little obsessive, about the art of Cartography. Digesting any knowledge I could find on the history of map-making, I began making extensive maps of my world, be it my bedroom, or the contents of my head. This ever increasing fascination with maps (especially hand drawn maps) spilled over into a genre known as psycho-geography, often applied to literature and the Avant-garde. The term Psycho-geography derives from ‘genius loci’ or rather, the spirit of a place. This is a key theme throughout my work and the idea of ‘spirit’ continues to inspire me, weather it be the spirit of an environment, a person, or an object.

At the beginning of 2011, Tom Dudderidge, having followed and collected a number of my works, commissioned me to draw a map of the United Kingdom. The map includes all cities, towns and counties, with specific detail to every coast line and off shore island. The land is filled in with a variety of marks and patterns, influenced by architecture, ordinance survey diagrams, brick walls, fields, mountains, cities and the many varied textures to this diverse and dynamic little land.

In my mind, we are all kings to a Kingless Kingdom.
