When an incendiary shell landed in the Bosnian town of Stojnik killing 58 people, Marko lost his best friend. Ten years later Marko receives a phone call, telling him Kemal's body has been returned from the Boxing Day Tsunami. The same body Marko buried after the shelling of 1995.

THEY ARE TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART, is the story of Marko's journey to discover why and how his closest friend faked his own death to live a life of exile in Thailand. Was Kemal Mandic the war hero Marko believed him to be? Or just another war criminal?

St Mary's University is in Twickenham, by the Thames in South West London. The University building sits in the grounds of Horace Walpole's Gothic masterpiece, Strawberry Hill House.

As the site that produced the world's very first Gothic novel, and boasting a highly experienced team of novelists on staff, St Mary's is the perfect place to practice your craft as a writer.

We currently offer a full undergraduate degree in Creative Writing, where students can experience the processes of journalism, poetry, non-fiction, fiction and screen-writing

Our Masters degree is a unique and highly specialized course which each year gathers together a small cohort of first time novelists to develop their craft and raise aspirations.

Visiting writers to the University include Nathan Filer, winner of the 2014 Costa Award, Anna Hope, author of Wake, Booker short-listed authors MIck Jackson and Hisham Matar, and bestselling authors Ben Aaronovitch and Christie Dickason.

The St Mary's difference, is its intimate size. Our tutors have the time to get to know each writer and their work, and I think it is an ideal environment for the practice of writing.
