Overflow: A Debut New York Solo Exhibition of Conceptual Art

Overflow conjures thoughts of farmland, barns and brimming silos. Seeds are important and are traded as a commodity. Cycles of life happen whether we understand the process or choose to bury our head. Our land, resources and life are laid out in front of us, one moment at a time. What will we do with what we are given?

As an artist and arts advocate my wife and I help produce and curate art exhibitions, provide opportunities an encourage artists through b.a.l.m. | beauty, art and life movement. I was offered a personal DEBUT SOLO ART SHOW at an alternative gallery space in Brooklyn, NY from April 13-26, 2012. The space is all that is provided, and the artist acts as the janitor, gallerist, host and receptionist. To be able to produce the large conceptual based installation and object artwork that I make, as well as be in New York for 2-3 weeks during the exhibition, I launched a KICKSTARTER PROJECT to raise funds to help make this project a reality. Bear Heart - A naturally peaceful bear protrudes from the wall with arms extended in a kind gesture, paws touching. The negative shape of the arms creates a simple but powerful message, and encourages the viewer to wrestle with larger issues of life.

APPROPRIATE ATTIRE: BURLAP AND EARTH
A men’s suit made from the same material to hold potatoes or coffee is buried to its knees in soil. Out of the earth emerges a single seedling. Appropriate Attire: Burlap and Earth wrestles with issues of power and humility, struggle, toil, life cycle, memento mori, forward movement and growth.

APPROPRIATE ATTIRE: ASHES AND BURLAP
A burlap sack becomes a women’s dress that either is rising out of or sinking into ashes which create the outline. From the ashes, new growth begins to form. In nature when fire burns the forest decimating it, eventually out of this process emerges life and the chance to begin again.

Healing Series | Carvings

The Healing Series is about thoughts and ideas surrounding death, life and love and the very real process of recovering. Each piece in this series is its own exploration of these issues and include notions of importance of material, craft, and process. Wood carvings are important to this series, because of the labor intensive process of removing material away from a live element that will continue to change with time.

Medium: Carved Hackberry Wood

F8 is carved from a single piece of hackberry wood, known for its ability to maintain a white color. It was carved green, so as it cures cracks and character develops as part of the process. The title is a part of my vision of the DNA section of the same name.

"TETRAMONOBELOS" from the Healing Series
Medium: Carved Hackberry Wood, Birch Wood
Dimensions: 111" H x 29" x 29"


Teramonobelos is a memorial piece. The title comes from Tetrahedron meaning 3 sides, Monolithic being carved from a single piece, and an Obelisk (nail pointed pillar). This piece is carved from hackberry wood, known for its ability to maintain a white color. It was carved green, so as it cures cracks and character develops as part of the process.

"DRY BONES | BONE BOAT" from the Healing Series (Side View)
Medium: Carved reclaimed splated silver maple wood
Dimensions: 36" x 90" x 22"


This Dry Bones | Bone Boat work is carved from a single discarded log that was 95" x 45" in Diameter and weighed around 2000 lbs. It was carved with a chain saw in entirety. This boat is a memento mori about death, life, and love; how even when there seems like there is nothing left, there is still hope. ©2011 Darin M. White

Healing Series | Visions and Dreams

The Healing Series is about thoughts and ideas surrounding death, life and love and the very real process of recovering. Each piece in this series is its own exploration of these issues and include notions of importance of material, craft, and process.
Visions and Dreams have become an important part of this series, as many times I will see these sculptures in this way and feel compelled to produce these images sometimes without understanding.

"Quiver Full" from the Healing Series
Medium: Fur on leather, burned, reclaimed & adjusted arrows, seeds
Dimensions: 36" x 10" x 10"


Quiver Full embraces the archaic idea of process, as I harvested, skinned, tanned, sewed and burned this leather hide. It deals with the notion of fulfillment, overcoming pain, blessings, love and children.

Foundation Series | Tools

This series developed as I explored many aspects of myself in art. I see these forms as a way to discover what is emerging out of this Foundation as I plunge headlong to discover what is next in this journey called life. I work with my own system of symbols with a nod towards history. Materials and processes have always intrigued me, and I try to use these to my advantage in my work. I am very interested in craftsmanship and beauty. I hope the viewer will have their own personal identification with the work and begin to ask their own questions.


One important symbol that I use in this series is the object or idea of tools. Tools are important to me for many reasons, the simplest is they one thing I use to create and therefore are a direct correlation to me with the process of creation.

Foundation Series | Nature
