Jesse Kamm

Jesse Kamm owns a clothing line called Jesse Kamm. :) She lives and works in Los angeles with her husband and 18 month old son Julien. (Someday I need to talk about their veggie garden. It's pretty awesome! )
It's so interesting to see how Jesse's style feels very opposite from Joanna's style despite the fact that both of their collections were mostly vintage. I love both! Jesse has a very selective and minimal style which totally fits her tall and lean figure. She put on all these pieces that I could never pull off (because of my short height) and everything just looked so fabulous on her. The shoot with her was a great experience for me. She used to be a professional model so she really knew how to work in front of the camera.
I kind of want to dress simple and boyish now and I think I need some Jesse Kamm pieces in my closet. : )

What made you decide to start a clothing line?
After graduation from university, I moved to California and began a 5 year modeling career, where I traveled the world and saw many beautiful things and many ugly things. These years instilled in me a love for finely made clothing, photography, history, and truth. Upon my departure from that adventure, I began creating my own textiles and sewing my own dresses. The collection was a response to a demand for my one-of-a-kind pieces by friends, stylists, shop owners, etc. It was not something I set out to do, it just sort of evolved into what it is today.

What's your inspiration when you make clothes?
I am inspired by the world around me. Underpasses, the flora growing on the side of the highway, cracks in the street, a tear in a jogger's sweatshirt, the color of the sky when I open my eyes in the morning. I find a great deal of beauty in the most unlikely places.

Describe your personal style.
It is ever changing. Right now I feel quite boyish. There is a gamine theme in my dress these days that has to do with my haircut. There is also this gallerist thing I am feeling... think Kim Bassinger's character Elizabeth from 9 1/2 weeks (the parts with her clothes on)... If she were to share a closet with Jack Kerouac.. that would be my current direction..

What are your favorite places to shop?
My favorite shops are Ten Over Six, Mohawk General Store, Gravel and Gold San Fransisco, Wasteland san fransisco, Spartan in Austin... but, that being said...I do almost all of my shopping at the fleas.

Do you keep your old clothes or do you keep your closet small and organized?
I keep my closet trimmed down to the basics of the season. I have lots of bins of past and future wardrobes. I have made the mistake of getting rid of great pieces, which I now regret. I keep it all.

Are there any key pieces you find yourself wearing constantly?
A pendelton wool blazer, a weird Kenzo oversized short sleeve button down, my rachel comey ankle boots, a norma kamali bat wing cardigan, and a shredded pair of baggy AG jeans from 8 years ago.
What was your last purchase for your wardrobe?
A blue leather SAMMA necklace from Maryam Nassir Zadeh in NY.. another great shop I failed to mention earlier
Can you give us smart shopping advice?
Buy what makes you feel great. If it is not a must, leave it on the rack for someone else.
Do you have any stories about amazing deals you've gotten on awesome pieces?
I have an amazing leather tote made by LL BEAn that I got at the rosebowl for $20. I use it everyday, and it is beautiful! I found a YSL suit for my husband Luke at a thrift store in SF for $35. That was the score of the century.

Who are your style icons?
Lou Doillon always looks hot. Charolette Rampling circa 1970's. Jessica de Ruiter is the best dressed gal in LA. Roxanne Marie. Tilda Swinton. Claire Oswalt.

Do you have any items you've been eyeing for winter?
A pair of RL shades is all I am missing

Describe your typical day?
6 or 7 am wake up call. Coffee, emails, dig in the dirt with Julien.. Trip downtown, home again. Phone calls during the beloved nap time. Look for inspiration. Organize, take a meeting. More coffee from LAMILL? Go play with Ozzy and Malcom (Julien's BFFs). Eat something pretty lame. Babe to bed, more emails, look at swatches, draw. Collapse on the couch and watch a netflix on demand with a glass of something stiff!
