Amanda Marsalis

Amanda Marsalis is an amazing photographer who lives in a super cute house in Echo Park with her super sweet photographer boyfriend. She has a thing about ships.

Describe your personal style.
My friend Joni calls it Gothic Nautical. I would say practical and classic with a bit a flavor I pick up in all the countries I visit.

Who are your favorite designers?
Margaret Howell, Jane Mayle, A Détacher, Isabel Marant, APC

What are your favorite places to shop?
Bird in Brooklyn, Margaret Howell in London, Mohawk General Store in LA, Totokaelo in Seattle, South Willard in LA, OK in LA

Who are your style icons?
Joan Didion, in one of her books she describes a list she keeps pinned up in her closet for what to pack on any trip. It is simple and elegant and interchangeable.

Also Alice Springs and Helmut Newton, Gloria Steinem, one of my dearest friends Kate has helped my style grow and mature, I'd be lost without her.

Are there any key pieces you find yourself wearing constantly?
A khaki Philip Lim trench coat I bought years ago.

What is your most recent purchase?
I was in London this summer and bought 4 pieces at Margaret Howell, I wanted more. But I splurged getting ready for winter!

Do you have any stories about amazing deals you've gotten on awesome pieces?
When Mayle did a pop up shop in LA I regretfully did not buy this floor length dress I was in love with, I talked myself out it wondering where I would ever where it. Then maybe 6 months later, even more, I was at lunch with a few friends in NY. One had showed up a little late explaining she had just come from a Mayle sample sale. I immediately thought of the dress, (I had even looked for it on ebay) I then bolted as soon as lunch was done, almost running there. I found the dress, my size, last one, and 75% off the original price. Jane Mayle was here and I was making a fool of myself going on and on about how much I loved the dress. It was wonderful!

Can you give us smart shopping advice?
Buy what looks good on you, your body, but also have a great seamstress. I believe in having clothing altered to fit perfect.

What's the best thing about your job?
How much of the world I get to see and how many amazing people I meet along the way.

Which beauty products do you recommend?
I use Mountain Ocean Skin Trip lotion, it smells like coconut. I guess you would call it my signature scent.
YSL Touche Éclat
Bobbi Brown Face lotion with 15 spf
I also go to the Korean Spa for a full body scrub as often as possible.
