Invited by the Department of Interior Architecture, Intervention and Adaptive Reuse at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) to lead a panel discussion on existing architecture in "Emerging Markets." The release of the new Int|AR Journal Volume 3 will also be announced at the event.

January 2012
Invited by the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU) as the Commitment Mentor for Advocacy and Awareness Building. Will be attending the meeting in Washington D.C. from March 30th - April 1st.
WOW - Identity Consultant
Developed new identity for WOW, We're Out at Work, a new LGBTQ organization that blends informal networking and educational programs. The inspiration for the new identity was a more positive view of the "scarlet letter." The "W" over a mauve purple becomes a symbol for those who are out at work and a member of WOW, in hopes that it will connect people with common interests. Currently WOW / Boston is the first city to hosts these events, with the goal of expanding to other cities.


Wide Open: A Conversation with ArchitectureBoston

On a Friday evening in December, Nicole Fichera, designer at Hacin + Associates, gathered seven of her peers from across the city for a conversation.

Nicole Fichera: I’d like to begin with an observation. When I look at the websites of young architects, I often don’t see any “architecture.” I see graphic design, photography, installation art, competitions, sculpture, painting. What does it mean for architecture if the definition stretches like this? Is this a generational anxiety, not wanting to limit our options?

BF: "I’m a developer addict. I went to RISD to study existing buildings, and to see how performance can be measured based not only on economics but also on design. Design should be integrated in the process of a developer’s project from the beginning to start evaluating its performance early. That’s the only way to know the return on investment and the return on design — the “ROD.”

The inspiration for the new identity was guided by the client's goal to build traditional high-end homes, $700k +, that incorporate contemporary living needs tailored to the up-and-coming young population of Dallas. The choice of typeface, Requiem, gives the Shaw Building Company a look that is established yet progressive.
