Seeing...looking...viewing 'by making a painting or by looking at a
painting we try to get away from the ordinary' Hovering between
representation and abstraction, Rory Bullock & Selena Mowat present
work that borders on the Utopian. Through bleeding veils of paint,
voids of colour and delicate, obsessive mark making, illusory
landscapes and figures possess the character of a dream or vision,
questioning nostalgia by simply exploring the 'possibilities' of
painting.
The melting pot of subjects in Rory and Solena's work reference their
own experiences, as well as the wider context of social and cultural
development. Natural environments rendered in Impressionistic impasto
executed in a toxic colour scheme. This layering of reference not only
reflects the multiplicity of contemporary life – the identity crisis of
postmodern art – but also creates unconventional formal results.
