ABOUT THE PEOPLE
"Solo 7"
Artist, messenger of peace
Of the 1 million dwellers of the KIbera slum in Nairobi, artist Solo 7's name is the first one sees. His iconic "messages of peace" began during the so-called Three Days of Mass Action, a nationwide protest that resulted in the death, injuries, and displacement of thousands. After witnessing the looting and violence, Solo realized the power of words and began quietly advocating for positive change and a move toward peace. With what little paint he had he reminds people that peace is possible, and even necessary, to astonishing effect.
Sister Freda Richardson
Nurse, medical marvel, miracle worker
The embodiment of love and selflessness, Sister Freda has committed her life to helping those in need. Along with her British ex-pat husband, Richard, this Kenyan nurse have up her position at her district hospital to build her very own rural medical center. At a time of extreme crisis and chaos, Sister Freda was there to provide care - in every sense of the word. Endowed by what she calls "divine appointment", she credits her faith in God for her success, as most of her patients cannot pay for the care she provides to run her center. In addition to remote medical care, hosting international volunteers, running an orphanage and day care center, Sister Freda has ambitions of building a nursing college to improve access to care, education, and to empower youth in her community.
Emmanuel Leina
Maasai community leader, hero to education
A remarkable man, Emmanuel works tirelessly to improve the quality and accessibility of education to children in Transmara District. A Maasai born in Transmara, Emmanuel is one of the only people in the district with a college degree. Softening tensions between tribes in his community, he has begun construction on one of five planned schools that integrate and celebrate every child - no matter how marginalized - to develop their minds, improve their health, and to inspire hope in their futures. Once a candidate for Member of Parliament and a target of attack during the post-election violence, Emmanuel, his wife Lillian and his three children are building a legacy of hope and truly creating a chance for peace in Kenya.
