About Longleaf

M. Ruth Little working in Gulfport, MS in Fall 2005.
Longleaf Historic Resources is a historic preservation consulting firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. The company was formed in 1990 by architectural historian Margaret Ruth Little to provide preservation services to owners, advocates and developers of historic properties and to the public sector. The firm is named to honor the Longleaf pine, the largest and strongest of the pine species, that was indigenous to Ms. Little’s childhood home region of the Sandhills, North Carolina. Like historic buildings and decorative arts, the Longleaf pine is an endangered species.
Longleaf Historic Resources brings thirty-five years of experience in the documentation, evaluation, and accreditation of historic buildings and landscapes in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Rhode Island, and Mississippi. Clients include the owners of urban buildings and farms, non-profit organizations, and developers, as well as local, state, and federal agencies. Email M. Ruth Little at ruthlittle@mindspring.com for consultation and rates.
One focus of the firm’s attention is publications. Ms. Little has published seven substantial books on North Carolina architecture and decorative arts. Her most recent book, Carolina Cottage: A Personal History of the Piazza House, was published in Fall 2010. Order information can be found on the The Book is Not Dead page.
Longleaf Studio, an art atelier where drawings, paintings, and craft papers are created, is a division of Longleaf Historic Resources. Images of these can be viewed on the Longleaf Studio page.
