As a lifelong visitor of St. Simons Island, Georgia, I felt it appropriate to recognize one of the best Barbeque joints in the South. Southern Soul Barbeque, located right in the middle of SSI sits in a former gas station surrounded with piles of split oak ready to be used on the smokers daily.
Southern Soul showed its dedication to providing excellent food and commitment to their customers when soon after their initial opening a fire halted operations at this location. The building nearly burned to the ground. Thanks to the devotion of the owners and the efforts of the community, the little restaurant was rebuilt within six months. And even during that time, they were able to use the welcoming resources of surrounding restaurants, a food cart, and the great outdoors to keep serving loyal customers their favorite smoked meats and sides.
The food at Southern Soul is mouthwatering good. I start off with a plate of pulled pork accompanied by fried green beans, Brunswick Stew (still disputed to have originated in sister city Brunswick) and thick toast all washed down with nothing else than freshly brewed sweet tea. If you are still not full from such gluttony, try their smoked andouille sausage dipped in South Carolina barbeque sauce. For desert, try the fried Oreos, that’s right, fried Oreos. Whether eating it in house or getting it to go and eating it on the beach, you will want to put Southern Soul on your restaurant list the next time you are down on the coast.
