A is for Aporia
A 3D type workshop held by Geoff Kaplan that explores the transformation process that occurs when a letterform is injected with the Z axis. The workshop started with a discussion around Letterforms, Jewish Folklore, Systems Theory and Entropy, as an entry point into the design phase.
My project, entitled “When Arial meets Helvetica”, explores the dialogue between the two typefaces: Helvetica, the popular font within the design community, and Arial, the cheap impostor that owes it’s very existence to the success of the previous.
By intersecting both letterforms in a 2 Dimensional plane I began to visualize their own specific characteristics. When stressing the Z axis onto the shapes, I decided to enhance and amplify the positive features of the more refined typeface(Helvetica) and ended hiding the imperfect shapes of Arial.
This project was inspired by the article “The Scourge of Arial” by Mark Simonson.
